This half-day workshop is aimed at those who would like to learn traditional botanical distillation, working directly with the land and distil seasonal plants.

In this practical, hands-on session, attendees will learn to run a traditional copper still with confidence and take home their own bottle of hydrosol (also known as floral water) made from Mugwort, as a true medicinal portrait of the place.

This course will give a sound understanding of distillation as a craft - plant selection, harvesting techniques and the distillation process itself - as well as an appreciation of how the choice of plant material shapes the finished hydrosol.

No two workshops will produce the same result, as the plant material is chosen fresh on the day.

You will harvest Artemisia vulgaris from the land, prepare it according to a secret recipe, load a traditional copper still, run a live distillation, and leave with your own bottle of Scots Patchouli hydrosol — a scent that you cannot buy anywhere else in the world.

Most botanical distillation workshops - and there are few of themn to begin with - will put you in front of a demonstration still and hand you a sample of lavender water at the end.

This isn't that.

Mugwort is a plant with something to say. Artemisia has been used in ritual, medicine, and craft across cultures for thousands of years — and when you put Highland Perthshire mugwort through a copper still, what comes out the other end is not what you expected. It shouldn't smell like patchouli. It does. Nobody fully understands why. That's the point.

Distillation is a conversation with the plant. You can read about it. You can watch a video. You can buy a hydrosol in a pretty bottle. None of that prepares you for the moment the condenser starts to run and the first drops come through and the smell hits you and you think — what is that?
